Four children were injured in a Missouri Auto Accident that happened last week on I-70 near Warrenton, MO. According to police reports, the car was being driven by a 15 year old girl. There was an adult present in the vehicle at the time of the crash and the teen driver had a permit to drive. There were also three boys in the vehicle, all of them were between the ages of five and ten.

  • Don’t drink and drive: This is illegal no matter how old you are.
  • Beware of driver fatigue: Teens claim they don’t get enough sleep as it is. This can present a danger even if the teen doesn’t feel tired.

Three children were killed in a tragic accident that was apparently caused when a tire blew out on a Ford Expedition on Interstate 55 in Missouri. According to police, the accident, which happened in southeast Missouri, also seriously injured seven other passengers that were in the vehicle. The Missouri Highway Patrol says no one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt or a child restraint. The passengers were all thrown from the vehicle when the tire blew, causing it to go off the highway and roll several times. The victims were all from Mississippi.

In both states, children 3 and younger must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat. Missouri requires the use of a car seat for all children who weigh less than 40 pounds regardless of age. Both Missouri and Kansas require children ages 4-7 to be properly restrained in either a car seat or booster seat unless they meet the height or weight requirement. If a child weighs at least 80 pounds or is at least 4’9″ tall, that child must be in either a booster seat or a seat belt. Once a child reaches the age of 8, that child may use a regular seat belt rather than a booster seat.

Two paramedics and another motorist were injured in a two vehicle accident involving an ambulance in Wichita, Kansas this week. According to police reports the Kansas auto injury accident was caused when the speeding motorist ran a red light and t-boned the ambulance at an intersection. All three victims were transported to a nearby hospital. One paramedic suffered minor injuries while the other suffered a broken collarbone and a serious leg injury. The motorist who allegedly caused the accident was also seriously injured but his injuries are not expected to be life threatening.

The ambulance did not have a patient on board at the time of the injury accident and was not on a call. Police are investigating the crash to determine if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.

Two people who witnessed the accident, stopped and tried to help the pinned victim but were unable to lift the vehicle to free the victim. Rescue crews arrived and helped free the pinned woman as well as free the injured victims inside the van.

All three victims were transported to a nearby hospital and treated for serious injuries. The woman who was pinned under the van was listed in critical condition upon her arrival at the hosptial. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

A 63 year-old bicyclist was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle while riding near 112th and Metcalf Avenue. According to police reports, the pedestrian-auto accident happened when a 28 year-old woman, driving south on Metcalf, hit the man on the bicycle while crossing an intersection at 112th street in Overland Park, Kansas. The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was transported to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The female driver was also injured and hospitalized.

There are two lines of thinking on this issue that stir the pot.  First, many car and truck drivers are not happy they often get stuck behind a bicyclist, who they feel my be taking up more than their allotted share of the road.  So the game becomes trying to squeeze past that bicyclist, while avoiding traffic from the other direction but still send a message to that bicyclist that the road belongs to the car.

Then there is the point of view of the bicyclists, who knowing that the law is on their side and they have as much of a right to the road as motor vehicles, sometimes abuse that privilege and take up more of the road than they really need.  The fact is both of these lines of thinking are wrong. The truth to the matter is that both motorists and bicyclists need to look out for one another, share the road and accept responsibility and allow right of way when it comes down to it.

  • A Kansas City woman was killed in a pedestrian-auto accident when she tried to cross Interstate 70 near Lee’s Summit Road in Independence, Missouri over the weekend. Police reports indicate the woman was wearing dark clothing when she was hit by a car. The motorist stopped and cooperated with police.
  • A 23 year-old man from Ottawa, Kansas was killed as he walked along I-35 on Sunday morning. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the fatal pedestrian accident happened around 87th street and Interstate 35 around 4 a.m. The victim has been identified as Kevin E. Polidore. Reports indicate he was struck by a Kia Optima. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the pedestrian accident.

A 28 year-old Kansas City man was killed in a drunk driving accident caused by another motorist who was driving the wrong way on a metro highway and caused the fatal collision. According to members of the Kansas City Police, the fatal drunk driving crash happened on Interstate 670 near Summit Street in Kansas City, Missouri. Reports indicate 25 year-old Robert Domsch was driving the wrong way on 670 when he hit the other car and ejected the victim. Domsch’s Blood Alcohol Content was reported to be .24 at the time of the fatal Kansas City Drunk Driving Incident.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD):

  • Drivers convicted (conviction is defined as receiving a court-imposed sanction) of a first DUI offense with a BAC of .15 percent or higher are 382 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash as a non-intoxicated driver.
  • Drivers convicted of a second DUI offense within a five-year period are 40% more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than drivers without a prior conviction.
  • Drivers convicted of a DUI offense who have had their license suspended are about 4.9% more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a properly licensed driver who has not been convicted of a DUI.
